We thank Prof. Camillo Manzitti and Dr. Cav. Arabella Cifani Stefano for suggesting the attribution to Pietro Paolo Raggio (Genoa, ca. 1646 - Bergamo, 1724) on the basis of photographs.

The work, unpublished, presents aspects that clearly evoke the style of the Ligurian and Lombard schools. In particular, it was suggested - for its pictorial rendering and iconographic composition - to the activity of Pietro Paolo Raggi (Genoa, ca. 1646 - Bergamo, 1724) by Dr. Arabella Cifani, and later confirmed and traced back to the catalogue of the Genoese painter by Prof. Camillo Manzitti with possible written communication to the new owners.

The painting depicts an iconographic subject that was particularly widespread starting in the seventeenth century: Saint Paul. In our iconography, the Saint is depicted as an old man with a long beard and armed with a sword, which at first glance might suggest that he was a great warrior, but he was indeed a warrior, but not in physical battles. The reasons why he is depicted with a sword may be various.

One explanation may be that the saint is well known for his Letter to the Ephesians, in which he describes "the armor of God." In the Letter to the Hebrews, which according to tradition was written by Saint Paul, the apostle explains why the Word of God is linked to a sword: "The word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit of joints and marrow.

The frame is provided to you at no additional cost so that it is ready to display as soon as it arrives. The frame is included as a courtesy and is not considered an integral part of the artwork. Therefore, any potential damage to the frame that does not affect the artwork itself will not be accepted as a valid reason to open a complaint or request cancellation of the order.
